Getting started

Duplicate your first post, see exactly what the copy carries over, and choose who can make copies.

Duplicator makes a faithful copy of a post, page or custom post type: the same content, every custom field, the same terms and the same featured image. The copy is always a new draft, and the original is never changed.

Install

wp plugin install subset-duplicator --activate

There is nothing to configure first. Every post type with an admin screen can be duplicated by default, except attachments, menu items and the site editor’s own types.

Make a copy

Hover over any post or page in its list and choose Duplicate. The copy appears as a draft titled “About us (Copy)”, ready to edit. The same action is in more places, all of which go through one permission check:

  • a Duplicate bulk action in the Posts and Pages lists;
  • the block editor’s ⋮ menu and its Summary panel, which offers to save your changes first;
  • the Publish box in the classic editor;
  • Duplicate this in the admin bar while viewing or editing a post.

While a copy is a draft, its editor says which post it was duplicated from.

What the copy carries

  • The content, excerpt, parent page, menu order, template, password, and comment and ping settings.
  • Every custom field, exactly as stored — Advanced Custom Fields, Elementor and Beaver Builder layouts, and Yoast SEO or Rank Math settings included.
  • Categories, tags, custom taxonomy terms and the post format.
  • The featured image, by reference. No file is copied.

The copy gets a fresh date and its own address once published. Plugin caches, editing locks and similar bookkeeping are left behind, so the copy rebuilds what it needs.

Choose who can duplicate

Settings → Duplicator (placeholder — not final) sets which content types can be duplicated, the copy’s title format and author, whether attached media gets its own library entries, and which roles may duplicate.

Whatever the roles allow, nobody can copy what they could not otherwise read or create: a private post, somebody else’s draft and a password-protected post stay protected.

The developer reference covers duplicating from your own code, the REST route and the WP-CLI command.
